My dance style parallels the universal language of dance—ever-evolving, seeking connections, and transcending barriers. I use these characteristics and the world around me to inform the way I move and the dynamic choices I make to tell stories in this universal language. Learning and blending different styles of dance gives dimension to the voice I have found through dance and allows me to further communicate with the world around me more efficiently, passionately, and authentically.
“The girl with the Afro” has been my name in dance spaces more than “Alyssa.” It wasn’t always a comfortable description, but today, I take pride in how my authentic self has become an identifiable trait. A lesson dance has taught me that authenticity and self-expression are what truly make an artist. Beyond jump-starting my dance career, with this opportunity, I hope to inspire others who don’t always see themselves in this space to embrace their uniqueness.
Most of my childhood memories were dreams of being in the studio. It wasn’t until a few years ago that those dreams became a reality, but I didn’t initially realize at what cost, literally. I knew I would have to make sacrifices to achieve my goals, but I felt guilty imposing that burden on my family. The $20,000 would relieve some of the financial strain on my family and allow me a stake in my own destiny as I seize opportunities I never could have imagined, even in my wildest dream
The search is on for eight dancers to be flown to a live judged event in Phoenix, AZ, showcasing their skills to Ciara and her choreographer, Jamaica Craft. One will be chosen to appear in her upcoming music video and win $20,000!
