As a self-taught solo dance artist and choreographer, I draw inspiration from the creators of urban dance styles like Willi Ninja (voguing) and Tight Eyez (krumping) and the dance-dominated music videos of the late '90s and early 2000s. Growing up, I lacked access to formal training but was fueled by passion and dedication. Icons like Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, and Ciara became my teachers, igniting my journey as a student of the craft.
Being in Ciara's music video would be groundbreaking, as she's a trailblazer who has shown how dance can hold center stage and transform music. Sharing this moment with her would be an honor and a pivotal step in pushing my movement forward as a solo dance artist. It would amplify my mission to revolutionize how dance is consumed and advocate for dancers to achieve fully autonomous careers, while celebrating the cultural impact dance continues to have on the music industry.
I would focus on advancing my career as a solo dance artist, building infrastructure in a field with limited support for independent dancers. This funding would also grow Underground Pride, a platform I created to celebrate and provide opportunities for emerging queer artists. Inspired by the disconnect between independent artists and mainstream platforms, Underground Pride fosters innovation, and ensures fair artist pay while remaining one of the most affordable events in Toronto.
The search is on for eight dancers to be flown to a live judged event in Phoenix, AZ, showcasing their skills to Ciara and her choreographer, Jamaica Craft. One will be chosen to appear in her upcoming music video and win $20,000!
