I’ve always created, even in middle school we would make beats and free style at the lunch table. The lyricism was awful-and I knew I didn’t have a career in music, but I knew I would have a career in art. When I hear music, I see pictures, shapes, visuals, etc. From there it develops into an insatiable desire to fulfill that vision, to make those shapes, hit that beat. I have this natural aversion to staying still so I find myself in new creative projects often.
I think representation is everything. I’m the first dance major to serve on my University’s orientation committee. A department that doesn’t get the attention it deserves so I want to be the voice for the program. Also growing up in the competition circuit I didn’t see myself on stage-ever. There aren’t many black-gay women in dance to look up to, until recently in mainstream media everyone looked the same. I want my presence to mean something for someone else.
I’m in the Honor’s College at the University of Southern Mississippi, where I am filming a documentary for my honors thesis! I’m looking at the cultural discrepancies of black dancers in the North v. South, and how those discrepancies affect our creative processes. The prize would help cover the cost of the camera, as I want to record rehearsals, interviews, and video diaries. As well editing software and intensives to see the difference for myself.
The search is on for eight dancers to be flown to a live judged event in Phoenix, AZ, showcasing their skills to Ciara and her choreographer, Jamaica Craft. One will be chosen to appear in her upcoming music video and win $20,000!
