I'm a plus size gal refusing to accept dance stereotypes. I love to move, create, and increase fat representation in the dance community!
Thank you for supporting me in this competition. Your donations and participation will benefit the Why Not You Foundation in their mission to fight poverty through education initiatives that empower youth to lead with a why not you attitude.
I trained in many styles as a child (ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, pointe). I quit dance at 17 because I felt like I did not belong based on the way I looked. As an adult, I returned to dance training in heels and contemporary dance. I gravitated towards styles that allowed me to accept my body and celebrate me uniqueness. It has been 4 year back in the dance world, and I now teach and choreograph heels and contemporary. My style is very fluid, emphasizing beauty with a punch of sassiness.
I never believed there would be a place for me in the dance world. Girls who look like me are not in music videos and aren't seen on television dance shows. Being in Ciara's music video would be the ultimate validation for me. It would crush my chronic imposter syndrome and prove to other diverse-bodied dancers that dance is for everyone!
With the $20,000 I would invest in dance performance projects that promote diversity and representation. Local classes have come a long way in bringing in people from all different backgrounds, but there are minimal opportunities for performance. I would love to bring the class baddies out of the studio and onto a stage where they can receive the praise they deserve from the public, not just their classmates.
